Which Linux OS can I use on my RDP Server?
Most HC's Remote Desktop Servers can use Microsoft Windows or any Linux OS distribution. You can also run a Remote Desktop Server on a virtual machine baes on Proxmox VE, VMware ESXi, Linux Containers, or any other virtualization platform.
If you decide to use a Remote Desktop Servers with unlimited data transfer, hosted in any of our Edge data centers, you can choose from our "officially supported operating systems". These are CentOS 7.9, Ubuntu 22.4, Ubuntu 20.4, Ubuntu 18.4, and RockyLinux 8.6. You can also use virtualization such as Kernel-based Virtual Machine (Proxmox VE), VMware ESXi, VirtualBox, OpenVZ, Linux Containers, Kubernetes, and Docker.
How does HC assign IP addresses on my RDP server?
Each Bare Metal or Cloud Remote Desktop is assigned 1 usable IP address. Additional IPs can be added at any time.
Cloud-based remote desktops or RDP virtual servers hosted in our Edge data centers are assigned their own IPv4 subnet, which varies from /29 (8 IP addresses) to /24 (256 IPs). The first three IP addresses are used for your server's network service as follows: The 1st IP address is for the router's default gateway; the 2nd IP address is reserved for router1; the 3rd IP is reserved for router2. The 4th IP address is the main IP of your Edge Dedicated Server. Any additional IP addresses can be ordered from Accounts.HostColor.com and can be used for various services on your server.
What does a Semi-Managed RDP server mean?
While most RDP hosting providers offer 'Unmanaged' or 'Managed' hosting services, HostColor does 'Semi-Managed' and 'Managed' Remote Desktop Servers.
"Unmanaged" means that the customer is solely responsible for the management of their RDP server. The provider's responsibility is to ensure that the server's network connection is working properly and, in the event of a hardware failure, to repair the failed components or replace the entire physical server.
'Managed' means that the provider is responsible for managing the network of the Remote Desktop Servers, the installed operating system, and the software environment. The provider performs operating system updates, software updates, and other management and configuration tasks on the physical server. In other words, Unmanaged Dedicated Servers provide no server-side support and therefore customers pay for the basic infrastructure service. The 'Managed Dedicated Servers' feature full server-side infrastructure, OS and software environment support and are therefore more expensive as the provider's experts commit time and work hours to provide technical and system administration.
HostColor fills the gap by offering 'Semi-Managed' Hosted Remote Desktops and RDP servers. 'Semi-Managed' means that our administrators install your Remote Desktop or RDP server on your preferred operating system (OS) or virtualization platform to transform the underlying physical server into a cloud infrastructure. We create a customized technology environment per your requirements and maintain a baseline description of the desired state of your RDP server. As part of the 'Semi-Managed' support contract, HostColor will reinstall the RDP server OS upon request and assist the client in resolving and troubleshooting any operating system, network or software configuration issues. All Semi-Managed Remote Desktop Servers include up to 30 minutes of technical and system administration per month. Any time spent by HC experts managing the server OS, software environments or troubleshooting will be charged at HostColor's standard Managed Service Provider (MSP) rates.
