They can use Microsoft Windows 10, Windows 11, Microsoft Windows Server 2019 or 2022 or any Linux operating system.

RDP Hosting & RDP Servers - FAQ Asked Questions

Is there an RDP hosting with unlimited data transfer?
Yes, but since nothing tangible is unlimited, we need to specify what we mean by "unlimited bandwidth". If by "unlimited bandwidth RDP server" we mean an RDP server that does not have a pre-set limit on the amount of incoming and outgoing Internet traffic it can handle and does not charge for overage traffic, then HostColor offers Remote Desktop Servers with unlimited bandwidth up to the size of the physical network connection.
There are two models of providing network services and Internet traffic on the Remote Desktop Servers - one measured by the allocated "bandwidth" quota (in Mbps or Gbps), the other measured by the transmitted "data transfer" (in megabytes or terabytes).
"Bandwidth" describes the total amount of data (in Mbps or Gbps) that can be transferred, typically over a 30-day period. "Bandwidth" is also a term used to describe the size of the Internet connection port - for example, 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, 20 Gbps, etc.
"Data Transfer" is the monthly amount of data in terabytes (TB) that can be transferred through your Internet connection port.
What type of Remote Desktop client can I use?
HostColor (HC) supports Microsoft Remote Desktop, Remmina DRP for Linux, and other RDP clients compatible with your chosen operating environment. HC also allows you to install the RDP client of your choice on any unmanaged RDP server.
What does Unmetered Bandwidth mean?
"Unmetered Bandwidth" or "Remote Desktop Server with unmetered bandwidth" means that the hosting infrastructure provider does not measure or limit the bandwidth used by the server. For example, HostColor allows customers to use the full capacity of their RDP server's physical Internet bandwidth port in most of its Edge datacenters.
Is my RDP Server protected against DDoS attacks?
Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks typically result in service unavailability and thousands of dollars in data transfer service fees, especially if you host your IT infrastructure with one of the major hyperscale cloud providers.
HostColor's DDoS-protected Remote Desktop Servers and cloud infrastructure minimize the risk of service unavailability and virtually eliminate the risk of you incurring data transfer costs as a result of artificial, bot-generated traffic to your server instances.
When you use our Remote Desktop Servers, your applications run behind sophisticated DDoS protection firewalls, maximizing application availability. Our enterprise-grade, DDoS-protected networks safeguard your IT infrastructure from unexpected network downtime, preventing loss of business and revenue. Our DDoS-protected network services filter out malicious traffic and ensure that legitimate traffic requests reach your servers and applications. Specifically, our DDoS protection includes the following capabilities:
  • Real-time mitigation of malicious attacks
  • Human-generated traffic that reaches your Hosted Remote Desktop or RDP Server
  • Native protection against network attacks of any size
  • No additional fees or charges for DoS and DDoS protected servers and infrastructure
  • No fees for bot-generated and malicious traffic on all unmetered bare-metal and cloud RDP server
  • No increased latency and long round-trip delays in application delivery in the event of a network attack
  • All IPv4 and IPv6 settings are protected from DDoS attacks
How does HostColor bill my Remote Desktop?
Once payment is made, the billing month for your Remote Desktop or RDP server starts from the moment we send you the login credentials. By default, all dedicated hosting services are set to month-to-month contracts to provide maximum flexibility.
You can choose between month-to-month, 3-month, 6-month, and annual contracts. If you opt for an annual contract, you will receive a lower monthly service fee. However, you will need to prepay the full contract (all 12 service fees). Please note that your RDP server on a month-to-month contract must be properly canceled and terminated before we stop billing you. All dedicated hosting services require a 30-day cancellation period. In some cases, we may allow early cancellation. To qualify for an early cancellation, you must submit a cancellation request from your account 5 business days prior to the start of the new billing cycle.
Is there technical support available for my RDP Server?
All HostColor Remote Desktop Servers come with free infrastructure support. We save you money. Unlike major cloud infrastructure providers who charge customers for technical support on unmanaged infrastructure, HostColor never charges you for such support. Our infrastructure technical support includes everything related to network interfaces and the core functionality of the physical components of your server such as CPU, RAM, and storage drives. However, it does not include support for the operating system, any custom configurations created and managed by the customer, and installed software applications. With our free infrastructure support, you can save money and get the technical support you need for the core components of your server.

Which Linux OS can I use on my RDP Server?
Most HC's Remote Desktop Servers can use Microsoft Windows or any Linux OS distribution. You can also run a Remote Desktop Server on a virtual machine baes on Proxmox VE, VMware ESXi, Linux Containers, or any other virtualization platform.
If you decide to use a Remote Desktop Servers with unlimited data transfer, hosted in any of our Edge data centers, you can choose from our "officially supported operating systems". These are CentOS 7.9, Ubuntu 22.4, Ubuntu 20.4, Ubuntu 18.4, and RockyLinux 8.6. You can also use virtualization such as Kernel-based Virtual Machine (Proxmox VE), VMware ESXi, VirtualBox, OpenVZ, Linux Containers, Kubernetes, and Docker.
How does HC assign IP addresses on my RDP server?
Each Bare Metal or Cloud Remote Desktop is assigned 1 usable IP address. Additional IPs can be added at any time.
Cloud-based remote desktops or RDP virtual servers hosted in our Edge data centers are assigned their own IPv4 subnet, which varies from /29 (8 IP addresses) to /24 (256 IPs). The first three IP addresses are used for your server's network service as follows: The 1st IP address is for the router's default gateway; the 2nd IP address is reserved for router1; the 3rd IP is reserved for router2. The 4th IP address is the main IP of your Edge Dedicated Server. Any additional IP addresses can be ordered from Accounts.HostColor.com and can be used for various services on your server.
What does a Semi-Managed RDP server mean?
While most RDP hosting providers offer 'Unmanaged' or 'Managed' hosting services, HostColor does 'Semi-Managed' and 'Managed' Remote Desktop Servers. "Unmanaged" means that the customer is solely responsible for the management of their RDP server. The provider's responsibility is to ensure that the server's network connection is working properly and, in the event of a hardware failure, to repair the failed components or replace the entire physical server.
'Managed' means that the provider is responsible for managing the network of the Remote Desktop Servers, the installed operating system, and the software environment. The provider performs operating system updates, software updates, and other management and configuration tasks on the physical server. In other words, Unmanaged Dedicated Servers provide no server-side support and therefore customers pay for the basic infrastructure service. The 'Managed Dedicated Servers' feature full server-side infrastructure, OS and software environment support and are therefore more expensive as the provider's experts commit time and work hours to provide technical and system administration.
HostColor fills the gap by offering 'Semi-Managed' Hosted Remote Desktops and RDP servers. 'Semi-Managed' means that our administrators install your Remote Desktop or RDP server on your preferred operating system (OS) or virtualization platform to transform the underlying physical server into a cloud infrastructure. We create a customized technology environment per your requirements and maintain a baseline description of the desired state of your RDP server. As part of the 'Semi-Managed' support contract, HostColor will reinstall the RDP server OS upon request and assist the client in resolving and troubleshooting any operating system, network or software configuration issues. All Semi-Managed Remote Desktop Servers include up to 30 minutes of technical and system administration per month. Any time spent by HC experts managing the server OS, software environments or troubleshooting will be charged at HostColor's standard Managed Service Provider (MSP) rates.
